A concussion may happen in many ways. There are basically 2 types of concussions: Impact or rapid deceleration of the brain occur when the head hits an object such as hitting your head or hitting the ground with your head and abruptly stopping all movement, or during abrupt stops such as a whiplash in a car accident. The other one occurs with forceful changes in direction cause the brain to spin tangling or increasing the tension in the neurons. During the initial stages of a concussion recovery protocol resting is important. However, as the concussion improves, a Physical Therapist can help you continue to recover properly without causing additional injury. We are also trained in recognizing a concussion when it happens.
